Alabama State baseball coach Jose Vazquez is reportedly being sought by an ASUN conference school. Vazquez, who has been the head coach at Alabama State for the past 10 seasons, has led the Hornets to three SWAC championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
The ASUN conference is a mid-major conference that includes schools from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The school that is reportedly interested in Vazquez is Jacksonville University, which is located in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jacksonville University is currently without a head baseball coach. The previous coach, Brian Borders, was fired after the team finished with a 22-33 record in 2022.
Vazquez is a native of Puerto Rico and played college baseball at the University of Puerto Rico. He began his coaching career at the University of South Florida before moving to Alabama State in 2013.
If Vazquez does leave Alabama State, he would be the third SWAC head coach to leave for an ASUN conference school in the past two years. In 2021, Florida A&M coach James Thompson IV left for Jacksonville University, and in 2022, Alabama A&M coach Brian Szabo left for Kennesaw State.
The loss of Vazquez would be a major blow to Alabama State baseball. He has been a successful coach at the school and has helped to raise the profile of the program. It remains to be seen if Vazquez will leave Alabama State, but if he does, it would be a major loss for the SWAC.
